This morning I went for my first instructed drive on my learner’s permit in an actual car. Despite the car being a 4-Cyl XV30 Camry LE that vibrated like a box of gerbils at idle, I had fun actually being in control of a box of metal. Excited for what comes next: first getting a lesson from my grandfather in his XV30 XLE Camry (2 more cylinders!) followed by learning with my dad in my own new V50 (post coming up soon). I can’t wait :D
Look at that epitome of beigeness...

I mean, it’s a literal beige camry? Wow.
I was lucky, our driver’s ed car was an Impala SS.

Learn manual ASAP. Then if you love Camrys, acquire a cool old one.

Remember: The car you drive for your learners permit will be the shittiest worst car to drive known to man. I had a shitbox Corolla.

Lucky. My drivers Ed car was a Jetta with a broken seat and it shook so bad it felt like it had tourettes.
Got to use my old Sable for the actual road tests though. I was supposed to use the Focus, but it decided to break a CV shaft the moment I tried to leave the rest center parking lot for the road test.

Eh, the Camry shook a bit and the engine sound was awful (not broken, but just Toyota 4Cyl) but at least our Volvos are plenty smoother, even with a 5 cyl...

That is quite true, the stupid thing kept taking off as I was getting used to the pedals...looking forwards to the V50!

It will teach you a lesson on shitty cars and nice cars.

Ugh, just two more lessons and I never have to see it again...

Interestingly enough, my grandparents have a beige Camry of the same generation but at least its a V6...I was just happy that it wasn’t a base Cobalt or Aveo or something like that...

I really want to learn manual ASAP but we currently have no manuals in the household and I don’t think anyone of my family or friends understand why I want to learn...(and no, I really don’t want a Camry unless its this one ...

The thing that I did: do the minimum 2 hours to drive legally, then do the last 4 hours 2 days before my license test.

My $400 SHO was in better shape than this Jetta.

Sometimes driving schools will give lessons. I’d check into that.

Could be worse. I learned to drive in my Mother’s ‘64 VW Beetle, and in fact I was reasonably competent in it, but when I was 16 and I took Driver’s Education in Hi-Skool - a state requirement at the time if you didn’t want to wait until you were 18 years old to get your license - I had a choice of three “full-sized” late-60s/early-70s sedans, a Ford LTD, a Dodge Monaco, and another one I don’t remember clearly. They might as well have put me behind the wheel of an eighteen-wheel semi/trailer or a cruise ship. Since they were a ton too heavy, five feet too long, a foot and a half too wide, and cursed with that infamous lurch-o-matic acceleration you get with a big ‘60s V8 churning a slushbox, within the first two weeks of class I bashed up the fenders on two of them. My DE teacher thought I was hopeless.

Hah! That’s a great story to have...hopefully though nothing like that happens to me...
